Administratively, it belongs in the Municipality of Thira. Akrotiri became known worldwide from the prehistoric settlement that was discovered in the excavations, which began systematically in the region by Spyros Marinatos in 1967.
Geographically, the region constitutes real cape with steep coasts.
In Akrotiri there is a lighthouse and is one of the best lighthouses in Greece. It was built in 1892, at the duration of Ottoman sovereignty in the island, from the French company “La Societe Collas et Michel”. Initially worked with oil and his radiation was 23 miles. It was reconstructed in 1925. Its operation was interrupted during Second World War and it began to function again in 1945. At this period it emitted a shine each 30 seconds, which was visible until 25 miles. In lighthouse worked four men. In 1983 was supplied with electric power, while in 1988 he became completely automated and since then continues attributing the largest luminescence. Today its radiation is 24 miles.
The most known beach in Akrotiri is the Red beach. It is found relatively near to the area of excavations, but the access is possible only on foot. Its name is based on the red rocks which they characterize the landscape.
Mesa Pigadia is a coastal area in the southern side of Akrotiri. The access is possible only by a dirt road, the beginning of which is found 16 kilometers far from Fira.
